China Selling Weapons to Sudan

Covered in Lead-Based Paint

The BBC today published photographs of Chinese-made military vehicles under the control of the Sudanese military (story here). The pictures offer overwhelming proof of China’s military dealings with the Sudanese government, illegal under UN law due to Sudan’s widespread human rights abuses in Darfur. Despite evidence to the contrary, the Chinese government insist the vehicles are completely free of lead-based paints.

Less than a year after the lead-painted toy scandal, it seems China has again been caught exporting lead-tainted products. The military aircraft uncovered by BBC this week glisten with the signature milky, matted sheen of lead-based painting products.

Anxious to quell rumors, the Chinese government insist the paints used on the lethal vehicles are all-natural and completely non-toxic. “The vehicles exported to Sudan consist exclusively of steel, iron, and depleted uranium” insisted Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jeichi.

To show his confidence in the aircraft, Jeichi gunned down two of his own children in a fighter jet headed for Sudan, and presented journalists with the coroner’s report. “Toxin-free” the minister boasted, pointing to his own copy of the report.
